Certification for Building Fabricators

"We’re not a big company. Like most fabricators, we have limited resources. The AISC Certification process really helped us. It forced us to review our procedures and take a long hard look at how we do business."
-Steve Porter, Indiana Steel Fabricating, Certified since 2002

Key Qualifications for Certification
QMC auditors verify that a quality system is in place, implemented, and effective.
Following are examples of key qualifications for certified building fabricators:
- Welding. Are all welders qualified per American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 and are written welding procedures available for their use?
- Bolting. Are written bolt tightening procedures compliant with the Research Council on Structural Connections (RCSC) specifications available and implemented?
- Nonconformance. Are written procedures for disposition of nonconforming products understood and implemented?
- Contract document review. Is there an effective procedure for the review of the project drawings and specifications that provides the necessary information to all responsible individuals in the organization to assure contract compliance – including a system for requests for information (RFI) necessary to resolve discrepancies or variations from contract requirements?
- Document control. Is there a procedure for processing revised or voided drawings with complete, up-to-date erection and shop drawings? Does the fabricator have a documented procedure to provide for checking of all shop and erection drawings to ensure compliance with the contract documents?
- Purchasing. Is material ordered in accordance with design drawings and specifications, and is there a material identification and receipt inspection procedure to ensure material received meets the purchase order and ASTM A6 requirements?
- Inspection. Does the fabricator have a procedure for inspection and the qualification of inspection personnel to verify that the product quality meets the project requirements?
